The little prince went to look at the roses again.

            “You’re not at all like my rose.  You’re nothing at all yet,” he told them.  “No one has tamed you and you haven’t tamed anyone.  You’re the way my fox was.  He was just a fox like a hundred thousand others.  But I’ve made him my friend, and now he’s the only fox in all the world.”

            And the roses were humbled.

            “You’re lovely, but you’re empty,” he went on.  “One couldn’t die for you.  Of course, an ordinary passerby would think my rose looked just like you.  But my rose, all on her own, is more important than all of you together, since she’s the one I’ve watered.  Since she’s the one I put under glass.  Since she’s the one I sheltered behind a screen.  Since she’s the one for whom I killed the caterpillars (except the two or three for butterflies).  Since she’s the one I listened to when she complained, or when she boasted, or even sometimes when she said nothing at all.  Since she’s my rose.”

 

And he went back to the fox.

            “Good-bye,” he said.

            “Good-bye,” said the fox.  “Here is my secret.  It’s quite simple: One sees clearly only with the heart.  Anything essential is invisible to the eyes.”

            “Anything essential is invisible to the eyes,” the little prince repeated, in order to remember.

            “It’s the time you spent on your rose that makes your rose so important.”

            “It’s the time I spent on my rose…” the little prince repeated, in order to remember.

            “People have forgotten this truth,” the fox said.  “But you mustn’t forget it.  You become responsible forever for whatever you’ve tamed.  You’re responsible for your rose…”

            “I’m responsible for my rose…” the little prince repeated, in order to remember.

“VERY GOOD.”

religion is often used to convince people they are not worthwhile but genesis uses the phrase “very good.”

but we can’t be REDEEMED without first being DEEMED:
1. worthy (mark 15:28)
2. loved (1 john 4:9-11)
3. honored (isaiah 43:4)
4. very good (genesis 1:31)

matthew 5:13-16 states we are SALT and LIGHT.
“God is not a secret to be kept”– the message
salt preserves.
salt brings out food’s original flavor
tasteless salt = worthless
vs. 14: like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.

i am an IMAGEBEARER, fundamentally, foremost, called to complete a task…
task: to make God look good by how i LIVE

When he is down on all his knees, flat on his breast to receive his load, he looks something like a goose swimming; and when he is upright he looks like an ostrich with an extra set of legs. Camels are not beautiful, and their long under lip gives them an exceedingly “gallus” expression. They have immense, flat, forked cushions of feet, that make a track in the dust like a pie with a slice cut out of it. They are not particular about their diet. They would eat a tombstone if they could bite it. A thistle grows about here which has needles on it that would pierce through leather, I think; if one touches you, you can find relief in nothing but profanity. The camels eat these. They show by their actions that they enjoy them. I suppose it would be a real treat to a camel to have a keg of nails for supper.

today in my 11:00 Japan class, professor hesselink lectured on the rise of the warrior class. since I found it absolutely fascinating, I am going to share with you what I learned ☺

to give you some background information, two factors contributing to the rise of the warrior class were 1) abolition of the draft; and 2) corruption of the shoen system. this system had become corrupted because provincial government officials, part of the nobility, wanted to increase their personal wealth by taxing private estates. it caused not only a large economic problem for Japan, but a social problem as well: provincial officials needed manpower previously provided by the draft, and private estate owners needed guards to protect their property.

provincial governors were the first of the warrior class. they became leaders of bands of mounted archers (men who didn’t want to farm but wished for local influence another way), the earliest type of warriors. they were called samurai, or saburai, from the root word saburau, “to serve”; following the kyuba no michi, “the way of the bow and the horse,” they protected and served nobility.

samurai thrived near horses and are especially connected with eastern Japan: western Japan was more cultivated at the time, but eastern Japan had expanses of pasture. in fact, the province around present-day Tokyo was called musashi, or “warrior storehouse.” horses bred and grazed in this great pastureland.

the word katana means “dispenser of enemies.” this single-edged sword, curved upward, was designed to cut the human neck. samurai were thus headhunters, paid by the rank of heads collected. now, when heads are severed, the pressure of the exploding arteries causes them to shoot forward from the neck; the length they traveled depended on how strong and large the person was. this lead to legends of “flying heads,” of men who were so strong that when killed, their heads flew a mile, or into the next province… or bit the nose of their killer.

what was done with the severed heads? it is a little known fact that after a head is severed, it continues to grow facial hair; a man could go into battle clean-shaven, be killed, and three days later his head would have a beard! before a samurai could collect a reward for a head, it was cleaned and shaven, its hair was styled, and it was pickled. it was then sent by messenger to the capital, and upon inspection, the samurai was rewarded. the head was then placed upon a stake near the capital gate to be picked clean by birds, the ultimate dishonor.

“samurai” was not an honorable term, because this described the warriors as servants. as their power grew, the warriors came to call themselves bushi, “martial gentleman,” a much more honorable name.

ezekiel 36:22-29, 31-32

“therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘this is what the Sovereign LORD says: it is not for your sake, o house of Israel, that i am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you have gone. i will show the holines of my great name… the name you have profaned among them. then the nations will know that i am the LORD, declares the Sovereign LORD, when i show myself holy through you before their eyes.

“‘for i will take you out of the nations; i will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. i will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; i will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. i will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; i will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. and i will put my spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. you will live in the land i gave your forefathers; you will be my people, and i will be your God. i will save you from all your uncleanness. then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices. i want you to know that i am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign LORD. be ashamed and disgraced for your conduct, o house of Israel!’”

“therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘this is what the Sovereign LORD says: o my people, i am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; i will bring you back to the land of Israel. then you, my people, will know that i am the LORD, when i open your graves and bring you up from them. i will put my spirit in you and you will live, and i will settle you in your own land. then you will know that i the LORD have spoken, and i have done it, declares the LORD.’”
